How To Be Both by Meghan Markle
Almost two years ago when The Tig was still up and kicking, Meghan Markle addressed something which I think I, like many others, have always wondered when it comes to "celebrity life" and "doing good." The issue I'm talking about is, how do celebrities reconcile their public image and their "day job" with their stance on "giving back" and how is that balance managed, in order that neither one or the other side is in danger of falling away? More importantly, how do they make it about the work they're doing and avoid becoming the story themselves?
Meghan's post was personal and clearly applicable only to herself and her own experience. But for someone as cynical as I, who often finds celebrity efforts in the world of humanitarianism wanting, her comments were an eye opener to say the least. The clearest thing I found, was that she so obviously spoke from the heart about her views that the resonance came through in her words, and even for someone as jaded as I, helped me to think, yes, it can be done.
In her own words,
"I’m consistently asked how I keep a foot in two contrasting worlds – one in the entertainment industry, predicated on wealth and indulgence, and the other in humanitarian work. To me, it’s less of a question of how can you do this, and more a question of how can you not?"
